Journey of the Zodiac

I feel very grateful to have been part of this project. We began brainstorming the idea a for long time and planned to work together in Athens for ten days to make it happen. It was fun, inspiring and very fulfilling to create these images and texts. 

The prints from Journey of the Zodiac are a collaboration between artist Eloise Fornieles, curator Alix Janta-Polczynski and myself combining text and imagery to tell the narrative of the Zodiac in an artistic and innovative way.

I wrote the text next to each image which narrates the story of each sign but mainly the reason why one sign follows another. The story of the Zodiac is for me immensely inspiring as it expresses our history as humans. Knowing why Taurus comes after Aries and then transforms into Gemini is key to understanding the essential quality of a sign. Otherwise we can stay in stereotypes and end up limiting or pinning down each sign rather than allowing freedom to the energetic quality to exist in infinite ways. This is why in every image we made reference to the preceding sign and the following one as well as the element, ruling planet, the part of the body, mythology, colour, any instrument or concept and evolutionary process.

Sagittarius knows the depths so familiar to Scorpio, but has found a way through and out the other side, into a world which is full of the everyday miracles of life. Sagittarius calls for an expansion of awareness. 

With an optimistic view and strong sense of belief they want to pass on their knowledge and wisdom. They are the master, the teacher, the guide. They feel at home while travelling, whether in reality or in the mind, as adventure and exploration lies at the heart of their purpose. The physical and mental landscapes through which Sagittarius travels are essentially about the search for meaning in life. There is often an interest in religion, philosophy and belief systems of all kinds.

The Centaur makes reference to the dual nature of this sign - the archer representing the celestial and spiritual realm and the horse the terrestrial one. 

Not everyone appreciates the direct arrows of honesty fired by the Centaur, although this sign is unlikely to notice when it has offended someone and may insist on the freedom to live life in its own way, even if an important relationship or situation must be sacrificed to achieve this. 

They are optimistic, enthusiastic, adventurous, outgoing, philosophical, freedom loving, wise, honest. They are very idealistic and might stay in the dream of an idea yet struggle to make it real. While the pursuit of a true sense of faith is likely to be an enduring one, there is a danger of dogma for Sagittarius, as the desire to believe in something may lead to a biased perspective which they want to impose on others. 

Integrating their opposite, Gemini, allows them to open up to other truths, perspectives and opinions. Incorporating the capacity to see the other, to respect their views and not impose their own is a journey. A fire sign will always be transformed by an air sign.
