Journey of the Zodiac

I feel very grateful to have been part of this project. We began brainstorming the idea a for long time and planned to work together in Athens for ten days to make it happen. It was fun, inspiring and very fulfilling to create these images and texts. 

The prints from Journey of the Zodiac are a collaboration between artist Eloise Fornieles, curator Alix Janta-Polczynski and myself combining text and imagery to tell the narrative of the Zodiac in an artistic and innovative way.

I wrote the text next to each image which narrates the story of each sign but mainly the reason why one sign follows another. The story of the Zodiac is for me immensely inspiring as it expresses our history as humans. Knowing why Taurus comes after Aries and then transforms into Gemini is key to understanding the essential quality of a sign. Otherwise we can stay in stereotypes and end up limiting or pinning down each sign rather than allowing freedom to the energetic quality to exist in infinite ways. This is why in every image we made reference to the preceding sign and the following one as well as the element, ruling planet, the part of the body, mythology, colour, any instrument or concept and evolutionary process.

The idealistic idea of Sagittarius becomes Capricorn’s ambition and purpose to work and make it real. Concerned with duty and responsibility, Capricorn works for the development of civilisation and builds upon what has already been achieved. Placing one brick every day; they are builders. The image of the mountain is an important one, and the need to climb it is consciously felt.  

Capricorn is most concerned with the structure and backbone of society. They are renowned for being dignified, cautious and industrious. Ruled by Saturn, other concerns are with reality. They are serious, organised, conservative, patient, strategic. They are very persistent and professional, efficient, organized and disciplined. They want to be in control and don’t show weakness. 

This is a sign of persevering ambition, which often does not feel fulfilled until it has reached the top of its chosen profession. The general orientation to life seems quite serious, this is a sign which knows that life can be tough, that anything worth having is worth working hard for.

The Sea Goat is a fascinating old symbol which reminds Capricorns that the origin of life was in the water and that they can’t materialise or succeed without internalising their emotions first. 

Integrating their opposite, Cancer, teaches them to be receptive, permeable but most importantly to register their inner world. For a Capricorn sometimes the emotional realm can be an obstacle in their way, and with Cancer as their opposite they need to integrate their sensitivity.
