Journey of the Zodiac

I feel very grateful to have been part of this project. We began brainstorming the idea a for long time and planned to work together in Athens for ten days to make it happen. It was fun, inspiring and very fulfilling to create these images and texts. 

The prints from Journey of the Zodiac are a collaboration between artist Eloise Fornieles, curator Alix Janta-Polczynski and myself combining text and imagery to tell the narrative of the Zodiac in an artistic and innovative way.

I wrote the text next to each image which narrates the story of each sign but mainly the reason why one sign follows another. The story of the Zodiac is for me immensely inspiring as it expresses our history as humans. Knowing why Taurus comes after Aries and then transforms into Gemini is key to understanding the essential quality of a sign. Otherwise we can stay in stereotypes and end up limiting or pinning down each sign rather than allowing freedom to the energetic quality to exist in infinite ways. This is why in every image we made reference to the preceding sign and the following one as well as the element, ruling planet, the part of the body, mythology, colour, any instrument or concept and evolutionary process.

Colour: Electric Blue, Marine and Turquoise. 

Dissatisfied with the current state - fixed, solitary and controlled by Capricorn - Aquarius challenges the convention and looks toward the future. Aquarius made a connection that only an air sign could: that human relations are often the most effective way to gain a place in the world. There is a strong awareness of society in this sign, which at its best tends to function as a fully integrated part of the group.

However, there is also often a layer of originality and inventiveness that needs to find room to grow. Aquarius may break down barriers here and there in the name of promoting greater freedom of expression. Their ideas often come as a shock to the system, as they tend to be ahead of their time, although confusingly, the traditional rulership of Saturn often leads to a strong sense of conservatism too.

Friendly and ideally democratic, Aquarius may suffocate in too emotionally charged an environment. It craves the clear air and rational discourse of logical individuals, who will not confuse the issue with clouds of feeling. There is a love of political or sociological commentary and discussion, and the humanitarian streak is often in evidence in this sign. However, slightly irrationally, there is also a stubborn and intractable streak, particularly if Aquarius’ ideas are challenged or dismissed.

The water-carrier may symbolise washing away the past and getting ready for the fresh new start. This is appropriate imagery for a forward looking, progressive and reforming sign. Aquarius has a researcher’s mind, a creative mind. It’s visionary - interested in technology, in what is different and unique.

Integrating their opposite, Leo, will make them embody their ideas by connecting them to their heart. Feeling the love, personifying the love and demonstrating the love is their journey.
